The first ten minutes
Stop the water. On public water, close the main valve where the line enters the house, usually in the crawl space or near the front wall. On a well, switch the pump off at its breaker, close the valve after the pressure tank, and open a faucet at the lowest point so the tank drains there instead of through the split.
If water is near outlets, a panel or anything electrical, don't go in: call your electric utility and emergency services. Otherwise, take photos before you move anything, lift rugs and small furniture off wet floors, and set belongings in a dry room.
If the water came up through a drain or toilet, keep people and pets away from it and stop using the plumbing. Then call. Tell us whether you're on a well or public water, where the water is, and whether it's a crawl space or a basement.
Ridgeway, the town
Our main service area is Northern Virginia. We also connect property owners in Martinsville and Henry and Patrick counties with crews that work here, and Ridgeway is part of that area.
Ridgeway is an incorporated town in southern Henry County, with its own town government, south of Martinsville along U.S. 220. The ZIP code reaches well beyond the town limits into the surrounding countryside, with Axton to the east and Spencer to the west.
Homes in and near town are a mix of older frame houses, brick ranches and newer homes; out in the county, farmhouses, homes on larger lots and manufactured homes. Crawl spaces are the most common foundation. Some homes in and near town are on public water and sewer; many beyond it rely on private wells and septic.
A split line under the floor after a cold night?
Call About Your Crawl SpaceOn a well and septic
For homes outside the town's water lines, the well is part of every water loss. Pressure comes from the pump and the tank, so turning off the pump at the breaker, then draining the tank through a low faucet, is how you really stop a leak. The system itself can leak: tanks rust through at the bottom, fittings at the pressure switch loosen, and the buried line from the well can split in a hard freeze. A pump that runs when no one's using water means something is leaking.
Well houses and pump sheds without heat are among the first places to freeze. A small heater or a heat lamp kept safely clear of anything that burns, plus insulation on exposed pipe, prevents most of it.
Septic affects the cleanup. Anything that came back up a drain is treated as contaminated, and the porous materials it soaked are removed rather than dried. Have the septic system checked if backups repeat or follow heavy rain.
Frozen but not split yet? We'll tell you what to do.
Call About a Frozen PipeWhen the split is in the crawl space
Most Ridgeway freezes happen under the house. A crawl space with open vents lets winter air straight onto the supply lines, and the first sign of a split is often low pressure, a pump that won't stop cycling or the sound of running water under the floor.
By then, water has usually soaked the soil or vapor barrier and the insulation between the joists. That insulation sags and holds water against the framing, so it comes out. Standing water is extracted, torn barrier is replaced, and dehumidifiers and air movers run in the crawl space with the vents closed until the joists and subfloor read dry. Reaching the far corners through a small access door takes time, and it's part of why crawl-space drying is slower than drying a room.
Clean, gray and black water
How much has to be removed depends on the kind of water. Clean water comes straight from a supply line, a split pipe or a water heater. Materials it soaked can usually be dried in place if the work starts promptly.
Gray water has been used: a washing machine drain, a dishwasher, a tub or sink. It isn't sewage, but it's not clean either, and carpet pad and similar materials it soaked are usually replaced. Black water has come from a toilet with waste, a sewer or septic backup, or surface water from outside. Porous materials it reached are removed, and the remaining surfaces are cleaned before drying.
Clean water left sitting for days can end up treated like gray water, which is one practical reason drying starts as soon as possible.

Ridgeway water damage questions
Is Ridgeway a town?
Yes. Ridgeway is an incorporated town in Henry County with its own town government. Its ZIP code, 24148, also covers a wide area of the county outside the town limits, and we serve the whole of it.
Our house is a mile outside town. Are we on town water?
Possibly not. Public water lines reach only part of the area, and many homes with Ridgeway addresses have private wells. If you pay a water bill, you're connected; if you have a pressure tank in the house, you're on a well. It changes how you shut the water off.
A pipe split in our Ridgeway well house or outbuilding. Does that matter?
Yes. The split may be on the line that feeds the house, so pressure drops and the pump runs on. Turn the pump off, close any valve to that line, and dry what got wet before the next freeze.
The leak at our Ridgeway house only appeared after it warmed up. Why?
Ice sealed the crack while the pipe was frozen. When it thawed, water came through. Check the crawl space after any hard freeze.
Our Ridgeway house still has galvanized pipes. Is that a problem?
Galvanized steel corrodes inside and weakens at the threads. Low pressure, rusty water and leaks at joints are the signs. A plumber can assess it.
Can laminate or vinyl plank in our Ridgeway house be dried without lifting it?
Usually not. Water trapped beneath it can't escape, so the planks are lifted to dry the subfloor underneath.
Is it worth calling for a small leak in Ridgeway?
Often. Water under a floor spreads farther than it looks. A few readings show whether it stayed small.
Does a yard that slopes toward a Ridgeway house cause water problems?
Yes. It sends rain straight to the foundation and into the crawl space. Regrading so soil falls away is one of the simplest fixes.
After a leak, can mold start in a Ridgeway crawl space?
Moisture left in building materials can allow mold growth, commonly within a day or two under the right conditions, and growth damages materials and causes odor. If you have health concerns, speak to a medical professional.
