Woolwine, where it is
Our main service area is Northern Virginia. We also connect property owners in Martinsville and Henry and Patrick counties with local crews, and Woolwine is one of the Patrick County communities we cover.
Woolwine is an unincorporated community in northern Patrick County, with no town government; the county provides services. It lies in hilly farm country along Route 8 north of the Town of Stuart, with Meadows of Dan on the plateau to the southwest and Critz farther south. There's no public water or sewer out here; homes have private wells and septic systems.
Start at the well house
Walk through a Woolwine property the way the water does, and you start outside. A well pump pushes water to a pressure tank, sometimes in a small well house or pump shed, sometimes in the basement or a utility room. To stop a leak anywhere in the house, switch off the pump at its breaker, close the valve after the tank, and open the lowest faucet so the tank's stored pressure goes there.
The well equipment itself is a frequent source. Tanks rust through at the bottom seam, fittings at the pressure switch loosen, filter housings crack, and the buried line up to the house can split. A well house with no heat is often the first thing to freeze on a property. A pump that runs when every tap is off is the tell.
Septic changes the cleanup: water that came back up a drain is treated as contaminated, so porous materials it soaked are removed and surfaces are cleaned before drying.
Pump breaker, tank valve, lowest faucet: in that order.

Older farmhouses in the valleys
Built before indoor plumbing was standard, these houses had pipes added later and extended with each addition. They usually sit on stone or brick piers or low foundations with shallow crawl spaces, and many have original or long-established wood floors, sometimes wide boards laid straight over the joists.
Newer homes and weekend places on the hillsides
Built in recent decades, these are better insulated and plumbed with modern materials, and some have walk-out lower levels cut into the slope. Many are second homes, heated low in winter and checked only now and then.
Under the floor: winter and empty houses
Cold air settles into Woolwine's hollows on clear winter nights, and a hard freeze comes most years. Pipes split where cold reaches them: crawl spaces with open vents, pipes along exterior walls, unheated additions and porches, the well house, and any house where the heat is turned down or has quit.
Ice expands and builds pressure against the nearest closed valve until the pipe cracks, often a short way from the ice itself. Nothing leaks until it thaws. In a weekend house nobody is in, that water can run for days.
Close foundation vents for winter, insulate exposed pipes, keep a small heater in the well house, and disconnect hoses. If the house will be empty, leave the heat on and add a low-temperature alarm, or turn off the well pump and drain the plumbing.

Call About a Frozen PipeThe wood floors
Old farmhouse floors are often the thing owners most want saved. When wood gets wet from below or from a leak above, the bottom of each board takes on water faster than the top, and the edges rise into a cup. Soaked from above and dried too fast, boards can crown instead, higher in the middle.
The answer is slow, controlled drying. Dehumidifiers bring the room's humidity down, and in a crawl-space house the underside is dried too, since the boards need to dry from both faces. Given one to three weeks, a lot of cupped boards settle back nearly flat. Sanding and refinishing wait until readings show the wood is back to its normal moisture level; rushing that step ruins more good floors than the water did.
Engineered wood and laminate behave differently and are often lifted so the floor beneath can dry.
With an old wood floor, patience is the repair. Dry it slowly, then decide what it needs.

Speak With Someone LocalWoolwine water damage questions
Is Woolwine a town?
No. Woolwine is an unincorporated community in Patrick County, with no town government or town limits; the county provides services. Its ZIP code is 24185, and we serve the whole area.
We only use our Woolwine house on weekends. How do we protect it in winter?
Keep the heat on at a moderate setting with a temperature alarm, or switch off the well pump at its breaker and drain the lines when you leave. Close the crawl-space vents and disconnect hoses. After a deep freeze, have a neighbor or caretaker look in, including under the sinks.
Does septic change the cleanup at a Woolwine house?
Yes. A septic backup counts as contaminated water: wet carpet, pad and the bottom of the drywall are removed, and every surface is cleaned before the drying starts. Have the system checked before normal use resumes.
Why did the Woolwine leak show up only when the weather turned warm?
Ice kept the crack closed while the pipe stayed frozen. The thaw let water through. Check under the house after the first mild day following a hard cold spell.
Why not simply open the windows in a Woolwine house?
Humid outside air can slow drying or even add moisture to a cool crawl space. Keeping the house closed and running dehumidifiers usually works better.
How do you deal with tree roots blocking a Woolwine drain line?
Roots find the joints in the line from the house to the septic tank. A plumber can camera it, clear it and repair the joints.
The hillside above our Woolwine house slopes toward it. Does that matter?
Yes. On a hillside lot, runoff reaches the uphill wall and crawl space first. Grading or a swale that carries it around the house helps most.
Do crews work at night and on weekends in Woolwine?
Yes, the phone is answered at any hour. A crew is scheduled as soon as one is free, and we'll give you a straight estimate of when that will be.
Can a leak in a Woolwine home lead to mold?
Moisture that stays in building materials can allow mold growth, commonly within a day or two under the right conditions. Growth damages materials and brings odor, which is one reason drying begins promptly. If you have health concerns, speak to a medical professional.
